Autumn Equinox and Celebrating Harvest.

In the northern hemisphere we are about to embark upon Mabon, also known as the Autumn Equinox. This a sacred time that marks the transition from summer to autumn and it holds a special kind of air. This is a sacred time, inviting us to celebrate abundance, honour our own transitions and cycles and work with our own darkness and light.

Understanding the Significance of Mabon

Mabon is a time of balance when day and night are of equal length. It symbolises the shift from the light-filled days of summer to the darker, introspective days of autumn. This equinox is a reminder of the cyclical nature of life and the importance of finding balance within ourselves and the world around us. It is a time to reflect on the harvest of our efforts, both literal and metaphorical, and express gratitude for the abundance in our lives.

Connecting with Nature

One of the most beautiful ways to honour Mabon is by connecting with nature. Take a walk in the crisp autumn air, visit a local farm or orchard, or spend time in a park surrounded by the changing colours of the leaves. Observe the signs of the season, such as the falling leaves and the ripening fruits, and feel a sense of awe and gratitude for the Earth’s abundance.

Creating an Altar

Setting up an altar is a wonderful way to honour Mabon and create a sacred space for reflection and celebration. Decorate your altar with symbols of the season, such as colourful leaves, acorns, pumpkins and apples. Add candles in autumnal colours like orange, red and gold. You can also include items that represent the harvest, such as grains, nuts and dried herbs. Take a moment each day to sit at your altar, light a candle, and offer gratitude for the blessings in your life.

Harvest Feast

Mabon is a time to celebrate the abundance of the harvest season. Gather friends and family for a harvest feast, where you can share a meal made from locally sourced, seasonal ingredients. Incorporate foods that represent the harvest, such as apples, squash, pumpkins and grains. Take a moment before the meal to express gratitude for the nourishment and abundance that the Earth provides.

Reflection and Gratitude

Mabon is a perfect time for reflection and expressing gratitude. Take some quiet moments to journal or meditate on the blessings in your life. Reflect on the growth and achievements you have experienced throughout the year. Write down what you are grateful for and offer thanks to the Earth, the elements that you particularly connect with. Expressing gratitude helps us cultivate a positive mindset and deepens our connection to the natural world.

Giving Back

As we celebrate the abundance of the harvest, it is important to remember those who may be less fortunate. Consider donating to a local food bank or volunteering at a community garden. Giving back to the Earth and our communities is a beautiful way to honour the spirit of Mabon and share the blessings we have received.

Mabon, the Autumn Equinox, is a time of balance, reflection and gratitude. By connecting with nature, creating an altar, sharing a harvest feast and expressing gratitude, we can honor the abundance of the Earth and celebrate the blessings in our lives. Embrace the spirit of Mabon and allow this sacred time to deepen your connection to the natural world and foster a sense of gratitude and harmony within yourself and your community.

To help harness the energies of connection, balance and abundance available this equinox, I’ll be hosting a special event. We will go on a shamanic journey together, creating a safe container to release, restore and revive ourselves as the wheel of the year turns once more. Find the event information here.
